Cecil Diggs, III was born in Charleston, South Carolina, and graduated from The University of South Carolina in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science, and Master of Divinity degree from Howard University School of Divinity in 1983.

 

He is currently Site Coordinator of a Charleston County urban after school and formerly a Community Education Coordinator for John’s and Wadmalaw Islands. CCSD is the second largest school system in South Carolina. It is a unique blend of urban, suburban, and rural schools serving more than 48,000 students in 84 schools.  The mission of CCSD is to increase student achievement overall and close the achievement gaps in order to prepare all students to compete in a global economy and make a positive contribution to our community, nation and world.

 

He is a former Chairman of the Charleston County First Steps Partnership Board. First Steps was created in 1999 by the South Carolina General Assembly for the purpose of having every child in South Carolina enter kindergarten ready to learn. The main objective is to ensure Charleston County's youngest children reach school healthy and ready to learn. 

 

He was contracted as a research assistant for Project Export; a metabolic syndrome research and study grant collaboration between South Carolina State University and the Medial University of South Carolina. The metabolic syndrome is defined as the presence of three of the following disorders and diseases: diabetes, hypertension, obesity, heart disease, intestinal diseases, digestive disorders and cancer.

 

He served as a Program Manager for the SC Primary Health Care Association to provide access to quality health care for all South Carolinians by coordinating structure that assures access to community-based primary, behavioral, and other health care services to every community in the state.

 

Diggs designed and administered 24 hours Character Camps for 60 elementary students from Orangeburg Consolidated School District Five, the largest of three public school districts in Orangeburg County, which serves approximately 7,000 students.

 

While doing Teen Pregnancy Prevention for South Carolina Department of Social Services, he served as a School Based Counselor in the Orangeburg 5 School District. Diggs also became a South Carolina Department of Education Coastal Region Coordinator for School Health in South Carolina funded by the US Centers for Disease Control. 

 

As the Executive Director of Bread for the City feeding, clothing and counseling the homeless and the hungry in our nation’s capital, Cecil Diggs served on the Washington, DC Mayors Commission of Food Nutrition and Health in 1983. One year later he became Chairman of the Commission’s Hunger Committee and served on the World Food Day Planning Committee at the National Cathedral of the Episcopal Churches in America. One year later Diggs was appointed Co-Chairman of the 1985 World Food Day Convocation Planning Committee and Chair of the First Annual Conference on Hunger in Washington, DC. 

 

He was Chairman of the “Let Them Play” Citizens Planning Team at the Charleston RiverDogs Baseball Stadium, now the Joe Riley Stadium. The Charleston RiverDogs is a minor league baseball team based in Charleston, South Carolina. The team plays in the Class Single-A South Atlantic League and is an affiliate of the New York Yankees.
